Nari Ward
Nari Ward’s studio practice draws heavily on the visual culture of the African American diaspora and incorporates both interdisciplinary and multimedia practices. Engaging with historical and contemporary discourse around identity, race, and poverty, Ward pays tribute to shared collective memories. Specifically, references to his Harlem neighbourhood underpin much of his work. Ward creates dramatic installations from locally and culturally specific found and discarded objects, repurposing them and imbuing them with new meaning.
Ward was the artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1992–1993 and took part in the 1995 and 2006 Whitney Biennials (New York). Ward has had notable solo shows at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan (2024), the historic Piscina Romano, Milan, Fondazione Nicola Trussardi (2022), Vilcek Foundation, New York (2022), Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2020), Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (2019), and New Museum, New York (2019). Most recently, he participated in the group exhibitions Ancestral: Afro-Americas [United States and Brazil] at FAAP Museum of Brazilian Art, São Paulo (2024-2025) and When You See Me: Visibility in Contemporary Art/History, Dallas Museum of Art (2024), among others. His work is held in the public collections of Museum of Modern Art (New York), Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University (North Carolina), Studio Museum in Harlem, Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Whitney Museum (New York), and more.
