Laylo Rikhsieva
Laylo Rikhsieva, known by her stage name Laylo, is a Tashkent-based singer-songwriter whose practice sits at the intersection of indie pop, folk, and deeply personal storytelling. She first came to wider attention with her debut single Home (2024), a lyrically driven meditation on environmental loss in Uzbekistan — addressing the tragedy of the Aral Sea, mass deforestation, and air pollution — that resonated far beyond its local context. In the autumn of 2025 she released Roots, her debut album, a conceptual five-track work exploring psychological inheritance, family memory, and the search for identity. Produced in collaboration with her uncles — traditional Uzbek instrument makers and performers — and recorded across Tashkent and Singapore, the album weaves ghijak, dutar, cello, and piano into a language that moves between the ancestral and the contemporary. Laylo received a grant from the Batyr Lab Foundation to complete the album's mixing and mastering. A self-made, DIY artist, she has spoken openly about inherited trauma, the pressures of globalisation on a younger generation, and the complexity of belonging to a country while not speaking its language. Her work is conducted entirely in English, reaching both Uzbek and international audiences.
