James Clar
James Clar is a Filipino-American light and media artist whose practice examines how technological systems shape perception, communication, and cultural experience. Working with sculptural light, installation, moving image, and electronic media, he uses light as both material and information system, exploring how reality, time, and space are mediated through contemporary technologies.
Clar studied Film and 3D Animation at New York University and received his Master’s degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, where he focused on new technological production processes and their application to artistic narrative forms. His work translates the structures of media, architecture, and communication into sensory environments, revealing how light can function as a narrative medium and spatial language.
His recent projects have explored diaspora identity, artificial and solar time, urban media systems, and the cultural memory embedded in technological infrastructures. During his residency at CCA Tashkent, Clar is researching the architectural and historical relationships between light, space, and cultural perception in Uzbekistan, developing new concepts informed by local sites, materials, and systems of illumination.
