Mohamed Benchellal
Mohamed Benchellal is a Dutch-Moroccan couturier who redefines fashion as a form of art, working at the intersection of sculptural craft, sustainability, and cultural heritage. Born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents, he grew up surrounded by textiles in his grandparents' workshop — an environment that instilled both his technical rigour and his material-first approach to design. He studied at the Amsterdam Fashion Academy and founded his label Benchellal in 2015, building it on a foundation of deadstock and leftover fabrics, a sustainable constraint he has maintained throughout his career. His signature voluminous silhouettes and sculptural cuts have attracted a global clientele, including Queen Rania of Jordan, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Sharon Stone, Alicia Keys, and Iris Apfel. Benchellal has won the Vogue Arabia Fashion Prize (2020), the Fashion Trust Arabia Prize for Eveningwear (2021), and the Emigala Designer of the Year Award (2022) and is listed in the BoF 500. His work is held in museum collections in Qatar, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands.
