Vyacheslav Akhunov

Vyacheslav Akhunov

Vyacheslav Akhunov (b. 2 July 1948, Osh, Kyrgyzstan) is a Soviet-born Uzbek conceptual artist, performer, actionist, theorist, writer, and curator. A founding figure of conceptualism in Central Asia and a pioneer of contemporary art in Uzbekistan, he has bridged the Soviet and post-Soviet nonconformist art scenes.

His practice is comprised of collage, painting, installation, performance, and moving image, as well as numerous essays and novels. Since 2000, Akhunov has been investigating the possibilities of new media, especially video. From the peripheral position of an artist who lives in Tashkent, his artistic production is connected to the experience of 1970s Moscow Conceptualism. He uses the typical iconography of the Socialist propaganda of the Soviet period, subverting the then dominant ideology through the manipulation of propagandistic images. His work tackles the ironies of perceived cultural marginality as well as the power of difference.

Vyacheslav Akhunov

Honoured Doctor of Arts, European Institute of Applied Science and Management, Prague (2024), Akhunov is recognised as a classic of the Soviet underground and one of the most significant artists in Central Asia.

While much of his work addresses the absurdities of Soviet life, some pieces remain strikingly relevant today, exposing the enduring gap between official principles and the actions of those in power. The themes continue to resonate in a world still marked by conflicts and broken agreements. His art also explores solitude, memory, and the necessity of revisiting the past to shape the future.
